Finding Your Target Audience to Market To
It took me awhile to learn this lesson because in the beginning, I wasn’t familiar with the target audience concept and I was selling and marketing to every single breathing organism lol. Not only did this waste a lot of my time because the people I was talking to didn’t give a crap about what I had to say, it was a great motivation killer since I wasn’t making any sales.
Now most people think finding a target audience is hard, when in fact it isn’t. It’ll take a little time because.. well you have to do some research, but once you have narrowed down your target audience, your marketing efforts will be so much easier.
Every business, service, or product has the potential to appeal more greatly to a specific group of people than it does to a generalized audience.
One way to easily identify who your target audience is is to ask yourself the following questions:
#1: What is my product or service?
Knowing your product/service in and out will allow you to easily figure out the broader spectrum of who can benefit from your product. What pain can my product/service solve? How will it benefit my customers? Once you’ve figured out the general audience who can benefit from your product/service, it’s time for you to narrow it down even further.
#2: Who is your prospect?
I’ll give you examples to help answer this question. For example, if your product helps people lose weight, “anyone who wants to lose weight” is too broad of a category. by marketing to everyone who wants to lose weight, you’re spreading yourself too thin. In other words you’ll end up wasting a lot of time and money. So narrow it down to a specific group like “new moms”, “athletes”, or “teenagers”. The more focused and specific your target audience is, the easier it is for you to tailor your copy to attract, compel and sell to that specific group.
#3: Where can I find my target audience so I can contact them?
There are endless sources from which you will find your potential customers. You could search forums, niche sites, social media like Facebook, or Twitter, or even your very own social circle. However, an easier method I think is for you to attract your target audience to you through a concept called attraction marketing.
What is attraction marketing?
It’s when you allure an audience to you by providing value, information and a solution to their pain. That way, your target audience will be searching for you, not the other way ’round. This is why it’s important to identify your target audience first so that you will be able to attract the right prospects to your business.
How Do I Connect With My Target Audience Once I Find Them?
It’s one thing to find your target audience but it’s another to keep them once you’ve snagged their attention.
I’m sure you’ve heard of that saying, “The money is in the list” ? There is a certain truth to that but there’s just one thing missing: the relationship aspect.
See you could have a list of over a thousand people, but if all you’re doing is pitching constantly and not connecting with them, you’re not going to make a dime.
So what you do is, once you’ve identified you target audience, answer the following questions:
#1: What do they secretly desire most?
#2: What do they fear the most?
The point of asking these questions is so you can talk about these in your copy.. and how your product can alleviate their pain. With that said, if you’re trying to get them to buy your product, focus more on agitating the pain (alongside providing them value that is). Get them to really think about their problem. If you just go straight from “this is your problem”, to “here’s the solution”, they won’t really stop to think about how much their pain is affecting them.
To build a good relationship with your target audience, you have to open yourself up and connect with them on a personal level. I’m sure some of you would find this notion uncomfortable, but how else could you build trust? You can’t expect someone to trust you if they don’t know who you are. Also in this day and age, people are skeptical.
Show them proof that you’re a real person and not some internet bot someone conjured up. Let them know a bit about your personal life, your experiences and your own pains. Only then will people want to buy from you.
